In wind powerplants, wind turbines are coupled to electric generators in order to transform the kinetic energy of the wind into electric energy.

This type of energy is generated through panels which when under radiation produces tension and specific electric currents. These panels can be plugged in series and in parallel to produce greater tension and currents. The photovoltaic modules can be made from different types of materials, being silicon the most commonly used to big plants applications.

The connections between these panels to the grid are made throughout an inverter, which transforms the energy produced in continuous current into alternating current, besides controlling the power injected.

The photovoltaic energy allows several applications, form household and buildings demand, to reduce the consumption from the grid, isolated systems where there is no distribution grid, to huge plants connected to transmission grids.

Concentrated Solar Energy (CSP)

The concentrated solar energy consists in several mirror panels which reflect the sun radiation in a specific spot or line through which a heatable fluid flows. This high temperature fluid is used to boil water of a separate compartment into high pressurized steam. This steam is then used to run a steam turbine and generate electric energy.

There are two types of power plants that uses concentrated solar energy. The first one utilizes flat straight mirrors to reflect the sun’s rays to a tower located in the center of the powerplant through which the heatable fluid flows. The second one uses concave mirrors that concentrate the sun rays on pipes through which the heatable fluid flows.

This technology, differently from the photovoltaic that allows small scale applications, demands huge areas and a great amount of investment in infrastructure.

The gas fired thermal power plant is considered an important ally to the inclusion of renewable energy into the Brazilian electrical system. Due to the low carbon emission, gas fired thermal plants are able to deliver clean energy on the time that the electrical system demands, ensuring system security.
